Hey everyone 🙂

apologies for being slack in posting. I have been flat out with uni and of course cheer.

I will be posting more in the next couple of weeks as there will be more coming up like Winterfest and my clubs performance day. Stay tuned for more details about these.

After a crazy two days the ICU Cheer Worlds (April 25th-26th) is now over. The amount of talent shown on each day was truly spectacular with the effort from each Australian team more than exceptional.

Each year the competition continues to improve and be outdone year after year. Australia should be incredibly proud of the talent and hard work from the Aussie teams.

This year’s Worlds proved to be Australia’s most successful with 3 x silver medals and 1 x bronze medal.

Level 5 all girl – 2nd places (only trained 6 times together)

Team pom- 5th place (out of 21, best result by Australian pom team at worlds ever)

Team Jazz – 3rd Place

All girl group stunt – 2nd place

Partner stunt- 2nd place

Unfortunately the level 5 co-ed team did not place in top 3 although the routine was great. The competition was tough and a couple of unfortunate falls took place, however saying that the level 5 team still managed to be fantastic and show the world how skilled we are.

Huge congratulations to all athletes and coaches for their tremendous effort over the past two days.

‘Australia is very highly regarded and respected by the international cheer & dance community as every year we have medalled and obtained better results.’  – AASCF Facebook page

Routines are currently up on the ICU website so take a look at not only the routines from Australia but many other teams who produced routines of such high standards.

The competition has proven to be a great success for not only Australia but for the Cheerleading world, hopefully this encourages the Olympic committee to go ahead with having the sport included in the Olympics.

Australian teams Outlaws, Bradshaw, EOD, ECA and Gymstars competed in the USASF/IASF World’s shortly after ICU Worlds and continued to show the U.S how great our teams are. The Outlaws placed 4th and became 2nd (U.S.A 1st) out of all countries competing, Bradshaw jazz team taking away 3rd place, EOD 6th place, ECA 7th  and Gymstars 12th. Fantastic job by all teams and all should be extremely proud of their efforts and results.

Well done everyone and congratulations.

Go Aussies, Tegan xx

ICU WORLDS

26 Apr

20130426-025231.jpg

It’s almost time, thousands of cheerleaders across the world have flown over to the United States for the annual ICU worlds competition in Orlando, Florida.

A competition many dream about will take place this weekend, Thursday 25th and Friday 26th (U.S dates and time). Each year the level of competition rises and this year will be no exception, the world waits to see who will ‘bring it’.

I would also like to say a massive good luck to team Australia who will be representing us and without a doubt doing us proud.

An even bigger good luck to my coach James Gibbons competing with Australia, us at Prestige Cheer are extremely proud of you and will be cheering you on back at home in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Coverage will be shown on the ICU website http://cheerunion.org/Home.aspx/Index

Good luck to all athletes and LETS GO AUSSIES!!

My Twitter List

12 Apr

For part of my assignment in my TEJ class ( The Emerging Journalist) we have to curate a list of at least 10 twitter handles that in some way resemble my blog and types of twitter’s that I would follow and would follow me.

This task was quite hard for me as many teams, cheerleaders and organisers of competitions are not on twitter and because of this I decided to branch out to a wider variety of cheer related twitters.

I tried to make it as Australian cheer based as I could but unfortunately I struggled. Stephen James who is a major part of Australian cheer and heavily involved with AASCF was the only person I could find. I then chose to add a couple of cheer fan pages that regularly update its followers with news and information.

Still struggling I decided to add cheerleader Jamie Andries  and her club Cheer Athletics to the list, following both these handles would help me be informed of any cheer news especially any that could Affect Australian Cheer.

The next three I added to my list are cheer unions/bodies that are in charge of rules, competitions and representing cheerleaders: International Cheer union (ICU)  ,Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA)United States All Star Federation (USASF). These three bodies/unions I believe would be vital to keep on top with crucial news, rule changes and many other things. The International Cheer union in particular as they are currently negotiating with the Olympic committee in order to have Cheerleading  as an Olympic sport.

A suggestion was made in my tutorial by my tutor Alyce Hogg to follow universities that have cheer teams as they may post about their cheer teams so I decided to follow some uni’s that have a team such as La Trobe University Deakin University and RMIT University

My twitter list can be seen here https://twitter.com/TeganAzar/cheer

And that is how chose my twitter list for my assignment  Tegan xx

About me

4 Apr

Hi guys! 🙂

My name is Tegan Azar and welcome to my blog, I am currently studying Journalism at La Trobe University and finished year 12 last year (2012) at Catholic Ladies College in Eltham.

Since 2010 I have been involved in Cheerleading which has become a major part of my life, starting at Catholic Ladies College (CLC)  in 2010 I never thought that this sport would have such an impact on me. I first went to a competition for cheer in 2009 to watch my friends, I had no idea what cheer involved but was willing to come along to see what it was all about. As soon as I walked into the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) I was amazed and thought I had walked onto the set of ‘Bring It On’, there was hairspray flying everywhere, teams in huddles , and girls flying everywhere.

I decided in 2010 to give it a crack and try out, it seemed like a lot of fun and why not? I step into my schools gym nervous unsure of what is about to come, I immediately think it was a bad idea trying out. Everyone had so much skill and knew what they were doing, except for me.. I decided to try my best and have fun with it knowing that I wouldn’t make it, a week later teams were posted on the gym and I glanced thinking there was no way that I would be chosen.. but there it was, my name on the level 1 team list! I didn’t know whether to laugh or jump up and down for joy.

And that’s how it all started, we became state champions that year in the high school division and had formed a bond with this group of amazing girls and found an inspiring coach that has taught me so much.

My coach from CLC and her friend in 2011 started their own cheer gym called Prestige Cheer  and from there I haven’t looked back, I competed in their first ever teen pom squad in 2011 and I am currently in the senior level 2 team Tigris for the second year in a row. Team Tigris competed in many competitions in the 2012 season placing 1st at WCC in November, second at WCC in August, third at AASCF in September and ninth at the AASCF nationals in Sydney out of 17 teams.

I’m hoping that this blog can not only update everyone on the latest Cheer news and info throughout the competition season but to teach people about one of the fastest growing sports in Australia, a sport that has become a major part of many across Australia
